Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition
NASPGHAN, in partnership with the European Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN), publishes the Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition.
The Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition (JPGN) provides a forum for original papers and reviews dealing with pediatric gastroenterology and nutrition, including normal and abnormal functions of the alimentary tract and its associated organs, including the salivary glands, pancreas, gallbladder, and liver. Particular emphasis is on development and its relation to infant and childhood nutrition.

JPGN Reports
JPGN REPORTS provides a forum for exchange of information pertinent to the fields of gastroenterology, hepatology, and nutrition aimed to enhance the care of pediatric and young adult patients and for investigators to pursue related areas requiring further study. The journal fills a specific broadly inclusive niche for reports across the spectrum of clinical and translational research from bench to public health, clinical study protocols, reports on scientific conferences and workshops, clinical reports of novel cases and treatment opportunities in this field.
Overview
JPGN Reports, a joint publication by the North American Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (NASPGHAN) and the European Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN), is a peer-reviewed, open access journal that publishes novel case reports/case series. It also welcomes selected original articles, short communications, method/protocols, images and videos, editorials/commentaries, and letters to the editor in the areas of pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology, and nutrition.

The JPGN Reports Fellow-Editor Program is an opportunity for Advanced fellows (3rd and 4th year) interested in pursuing an editorial role in medical publishing to be mentored by a JPGN Associate Editor. This is a 12-month program in which the Fellow Editor will work remotely with an assigned Associate Editor to learn about and be involved in the editorial processes. The program will also offer an introduction to the journal's production and post-publication activities. This is a great opportunity to network and gain knowledgeable skills in workings of a medical journal.
Fellow-Editor will:
- Receive an overview on the editorial processes.
- Be paired with a journal Associate Editor specific to their area of interest e.g., Hepatology, IBD or nutrition, or of their choice.
- Fellow-Editor will participate in the editorial assessment of manuscripts through assignments (from the Editor or an Associate Editors), followed by careful reading of assigned manuscripts, in selection of reviewers, and in assessment of reviews. They will discuss reviews of each paper with the Associate Editor and/or Editorial team, leading to development of a final recommendation.
Selection Process:
- The applicant needs to agree for the time commitment of 12 months, 1-2 hours each week. It is expected that the Fellowship director will work closely with the fellow to ensure that time will be made available for attendance at the weekly editorial board meetings (Thursday each week 4 pm to 5 pm Eastern time) and other required activities. Please note this is a voluntary position and no money/financial support is offered.
- Candidates must be starting their 3rd or 4th year when entering the program in July.
- Selection will be made by the Journal’s Editor-in-Chief and Associate Editors.
- The ideal candidate should be self-motivated and have an interest in medical publishing, editing, and peer review.
- Previous authorship of publications is desirable but not required.
- Previous work as a fellow reviewer for JPGN is desirable but not required.
Duties and Responsibilities
The position will include responsibilities and activities as outlined below:
- Learn about the peer review process and how it continues to evolve.
- How a manuscript is submitted, and the various levels of decision-making involved before a manuscript qualifies for publication.
- Attend weekly virtual editorial meetings.
- Attend JPGN/JPGN Reports meeting during NASPGHAN annual meeting.
- The Fellow Editor following will submit to the Journal editors a report on their experience
- Under the supervisions of an assigned editor-mentor the Fellow-Editor will follow manuscripts from submission to decision.

JPGN Fellow Reviewer Program
Peer review is a critical task in academic medicine. However, the process providing a meaningful critique to enable reliability and accuracy of research considered for publication requires training and experience. The JPGN Fellow Reviewer Program is a unique opportunity for 3rd year Pediatric Gastroenterology Fellows and 4th year Advanced Fellows to become active members in the peer-review process for JPGN

Eligibility
- All 3rd year Pediatric Gastroenterology Fellows and 4th year Advanced Fellows
Requirements
- Completed application form
- Approval from your Program Director (or equivalent)
- Approval from an identified Faculty member who will participate as a mentor (see expectations below)
Expectations
- For Fellows:
- Respond to Invitation to Review from JPGN within 48 hours of receiving email
- Treat submitted manuscripts with respect, performing a thoughtful and complete read of the manuscript, and providing constructive comments for the authors
- Follow ethical guidelines for reviews, including confidentiality of the manuscript
- Complete the review expeditiously to allow time for supervision and revision by mentor and still meet the review deadline
- It is generally accepted that Mentor will have 7 days to complete their review process and discuss thoroughly with the trainee; however, the exact timing will be determined by the trainee and mentor
- Submit completed review within 14 days of acceptance
- For Faculty Mentors:
- Provide supervision to the trainee concerning quality and constructiveness of the review
- Provide training, mentorship, and comprehensive feedback throughout the review process
- Treat submitted manuscripts with respect, performing a thoughtful and complete read of the manuscript, and providing constructive comments for the authors
- Work with the Fellow to submit the review on time
